A DAY WITHOUT IMMIGRANTS

PAINTING LA COMUNIVERSIDAD

R.C.A.F. MID-FLIGHT

R&R, 2026

You are invited to “A Day Without Immigrants: 20th Anniversary March and Rally” in support of our undocumented siblings on Friday, May 1st, 2026 at 10:00am at historical Southside Park in Downtown Sacramento, CA.

This act of solidarity is very important right now due to the ICE raids, kidnappings, and abuses across the United States under Donald Trump, who has a history of racism against our community. A Day Without Immigrants in Sacramento will include a rally at Southside Park, a march to the John Moss Building, as well as an art action with community speakers, musical performances, and food and beverages with NO ICE!

The Sacramento State University Galleries is honored to present Painting La Comuniversidad: Three Murals of the Royal Chicano Air Force at the University Library Gallery. The exhibit is curated by art historian and Sacramento State alumna Janina López, and will be on view from February 12th to May 1st, 2026. The opening reception will take place on Wednesday, February 11th at 6:30pm.

Aside from having two of my earlier pieces in the exhibit, I served as the graphic designer for this project creating all the signage and publicity items. Also, Vicky and I did all the English to Spanish translations for the exhibit.

R.C.A.F. Mid-Flight: The Artwork and Influence of the Royal Chicano Air Force celebrates the groundbreaking contributions of the Royal Chicano Air Force, a collective of visionary artists who have shaped Chicana/o/x art and culture since the early 1970s. Blending visual media, culture, performance, humor, and activism, the RCAF championed Chicano pride, social justice, and community empowerment. This exhibition honors their artistic influence, showcasing both the original members’ creativity and the work of artists inspired by their legacy.

I will be participating on a panel with other artists that have been influenced by the veteranos of the RCAF on Wednesday, March 18th. Come through!

R&R, 2026: Recovering Ricardo Favela’s Royal Chicano Air Force Poster Collection at San José State University exhibition includes original artwork (serigraphs, called “silkscreen posters,”) by the vanguard Chicano/a art collective, the Royal Chicano Air Force [RCAF]. Founded in the early 1970s, the RCAF was a principal image maker of the Chicano movement and continued making art into the twenty-first century. The RCAF art collection at King Library consists of 192 posters, of which approximately 35 will be on display. In addition to these artworks, Special Collections will host a range of vibrant objects and records of this creative and cultural force alongside artifacts from the 1970s to twenty-first century that are part of the SJSU collections.

ARCHIVO REVOLTOSO

SACRAMENTO STATE PRESIDENT’S MEDAL FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE

I was awarded the Sacramento State President’s Medal for Distinguished Service this year. The celebration and honoring consisted of two events. For the first event, Sacramento State hosted a private reception at the Julia Morgan House on April 14th to honor two honorary PhD recipients, and two President’s Medal for Distinguished Service recipients. The reception was attended by 150 guests, which were family members, close friends, and colleagues of the honorees. The reception was very intimate, and each of the honorees delivered a 10 minute speech. In my speech, I thank all my guests for being part of my journey, and for supporting, and collaborating with me over the past 25 years. It was a beautiful reception!

For the second event, I participated in the College of Arts & Letters Commencement Ceremony at the Golden 1 Center on Friday, May 19th, 2023. In front of the graduating class, President Nelson awarded me the Sacramento State President’s Medal for Distinguished Service. It was such a beautiful and empowering ceremony. I shed tears, but not because I was awarded this medal. I shed tears when Sacramento State President Robert Nelsen asked the graduates to stand if they were the first individuals in their families to earn a college degree, and about two thirds of them, around 750 graduates stood up and rejoiced in their loved ones applauses and cheers. I kept shedding tears when President Nelsen asked parents to stand up, and they rejoiced in the children’s applauses and cheers. It continued when the president asked grandparents to stand, and then spouses, and finally the graduates’ children. Everyone’s eyes were hella watery, no lie. It was a great morning! This was the first ceremony of seven. Over 9,500 students are graduating from Sacramento State over the next three days. President Nelsen stated that Sacramento State changes lives right before he asked the first generation graduates to stand to prove his point. I am here to tell you that Sacramento State does changes lives, it changed mine.
